Thats right! Three weeks without a hairdryer, a straightener, curling iron - without anything!
And to be honest I don't know why I didn't commit to this ages ago!
The experience so far has taught me that:
a) My hair has a lot of natural shine that was previously blasted out of it; and
b) I actually have volume in the crown if I just let it dry and set naturally - so no need to get happy with the backcombing.
I have however, got a bit wise to the challenge - through previous attempts I have realised that the mantra "less is more" rings true.
Whereas before I was drenching my hair in products to try and create a semblence of a style, now I just use two carefully selected ones and that's all I need.
These products are:
* Kerastase Oleo-Relax - a serum I apply when my hair is 80% dry; and
* Aussie Volume + Gloss hairspray - the only hairspray I have ever stayed loyal too because it does exactly what it says on the tin and it also smells good.
I wash it with any random shampoo and conditioner - at the moment it's these giant Aveda bottles that the boyfriend got me - yes, he understands high end hair products and swears by Aveda! :)
I just let it dry and do its thing. I think this works for me because of these products but also because I don't mind the natural texture of my hair. It's quite straight and providing I don't sleep on it wet (which only results in massive bed head) it works itself out. I also think my success has something to do with the time of year - technically there is less drizzle and that means less menacing frizz.
The next part of the experiment
The next part of the experiment is taking two of these supplements from Kerastase, every day.
Click on the picture below to get an idea of the ingredients (which to be honest look pretty standard but anyhow - thanks mum!)
It was my mum who introduced me to these - she picked them up at her hairdressers and then ordered some from hqhair.com when she realised they were cheaper online.
They are supposed to provide you with added density but you need to take them for at least three months. Mum is on month two and I haven't even started!
The only reason I am even taking these is because Kerastase products have never let me down before. We will see but every little helps, right?
Have you ever done this no heat challenge?

I have the rosemary and mint shampoo/conditioner combination and I think they're amazing! Plus they smell divine :)
I gave up using heat about seven months ago and my hair is definitely healthier for it. I only use them now for special occasions which makes the effect all the more noticeable.
Good luck with the rest of the challenge!
I love the rosemary min.. I use it on and off for 2 years now. When I first got it I fainted in the shower (shamefull i know) because i literaly inhaled too deeply in too hot steam!
Love the products you use!
I do no heat almost everyday. I believe this is the reason that my hair is faily healthy and shiny. I do purchasing for beauty stores and we cant keep enough stock of the Nioxin and Phyto hair supplements, in case you ever want to try something else.
I pretty much never use heat because I dont have the time and Im too lazy to bother! What do you do with the hairspray? Do you just spray your hair and then tease for volume?
i havnt but im tempted too :] im scared my hair is a mess! lol
I actually started doing a No heat for 3 months now. My hair was getting very damaged with split ends because i have thin fragile hair. I have noticed a difference. And i have also finished 2 months of the Phyto pills. I also wear extentions sewn in so i just let it all air dry, which turns it into loose body waves. I apply Redken Bodyfull Thickneing serum which calmes down the flyaways.
Unfortunately, I really need the heat. My natural hair is coarse, curly and frizzy - so need the hair straightener. But, since u have straight hair it's good that u r doing the no heat challenge.
though i'm only 17, i never do anything to my hair! :) i have had a perm 5 times in the past but i'm wayy over chemically treating my hair. thankfully i'm asian so i have ridiculously straight, dense hair and i used to hate it but i love it because everyone at school is always jealous of my hair!! though i do love curls, i think the only way i'll ever curl my hair is through the "no heat curling" video that michellephan made.
i've always hated blowdrying - i found the heat to be too harsh on my scalp. and i've always feared curling irons because i don't want to burn my neck or anything.
since i have allergies i have no choice but to wash my hair at night .. though my hair takes HOURS to air dry, i always sleep w/it slightly damp and wake up to frizz-free hair! if i wash my hair in the morning, i find my hair is much more full of frizz .. i don't know why.
Laura, I would love to see a video about how you '' no-heat'' style your hair !
My hair is my LIFE so I understand your need for this. I try to lay off the heat as much as possible for years now. I never blowdry only hot rollers occasionally! Keep it up, so worth it. Healthy hair is the most important "style" there is. xx
No heat is hard! My hair isn't wavy enough to be wavy and isn't straight enough to be straight! I either have to curl or flat iron. I am quite jealous :)
If my hair air dries, it dries flat and looks greasy :(
My stylists have always said the less you touch your hair, the better it looks. I brush once a day, and air dry. I use a semi dye sometimes. I do use a mousse for curls after I use Silk Therapy. That's it, and my hair has never been shinier.
Great challenge!
I've been doing the NO HEAT since March bec. it's not too cold anymore and it's ok to have a damp hair :) I have been using Kerastase Oleo Relax for 2 yrs. now and alternate it with the BC product. I apply when my hair is still wet, just after shower and sometimes apply it again when my hair is dry. Kerastase was highly recommended to me by my hair salon and I'm so glad I got it. It really made my hair healthy, damage free and shiny. Good to know you've been using it too. =)
i have been tempted to do this for SO LONG, but i am scared of the result! my hair is naturally super curly, but from straightening it for years it's now a wave, with some pieces completely straight...i feel like summer might be the best time to start this challenge though...hmmm...maybe it's time to see if i can finally save my hair and hide my straightener?!
My hair is just slightly wavy, not enough to look good left on its own. It looks good curled or straightened only. A no heat challenge would just result in a ponytail every day.
Your hair is looking really great though! =)
your so lucky to have straight hair, i would love to be able to use no heat on my hair but its wavey and a big "poof" without heat :( im trying not to use a hairdryer and only 5mins of heat a day :) or every other day
Love kerastase products, such great quality, i love their 5day heat protection cream but obviously you won't be needing that!! I don't think i could ever do this it would take about 2 hours for my hair to dry!
I have never tried to use no heat apart from when I'm just being lazy and leave it to do its own thing.
My hair has a mind of its own and the thought of leaving it to its own devices scares me! :(
But you know what.. I just might give it a try! xx

I've been doing the no heat thing for over 2 months now. Although I've cheated twice when my hair just did not want to behave that day. I use L'oreals elvive smooth silk light conditioning spray which get rid of all my frizz so I can let it air dry and sleep on it and when I wake up my hair is frizz free.
I don't think I will ever go back to using heat daily, special occasions yes but for every day there is no need for my hair.
I don't know if I'm weird but the only time my hair gets heat is when I'm prepping for a special occasion like debuts, night outs, and events like that. =) I normally just let it air dry.
Good luck with the no heat challenge!
You're a braver girl than me with that no heat challenge. I haven't used my GHD's in about 3 months but that's as far as I've got!I'm going to give my hair a rest from the hairdryer on holiday but I don't think I could give it up completely. My hair just doesn't behave that well!Love your blog, come check out mine sometime x
Ive got that Aveda Rosemary and mint shampoo and conditioner. While I love the shampoo. For some reason the conditioner leaves like a film on my hair.
No matter how well ive rinsed it off. It left my hair really knotty. I ended up giving my friend the bottle. Gave up after 3 trys with it. And she had the same problem. Is it just us?
I second the YT video on how you do your "no heat hair"! :) x
I have been using Kerastase Oleo Relax serum since Christmas now and it works wondera on my hair. I love it.
I wana see a pic of your no heat hair :)
I'm on a partial "no heat challenge", I guess you could say. My hair is very tightly curled so I get it chemically straightened (relaxed) every month, but I havent put a flat iron, blow drier or curling iron to my hair in quite some time. Maybe a few months? I know the chemicals are no good for my hair but at least i'm reducing the damage by eliminating the heat.
Your boyfriend rules! I LOVE Aveda hair products, Rosemary Mint shampoo makes your hair look so healthy. My sister uses hair straightening almost every day and her hair growth has slowed dramatically so we've both decided to only use the iron on occasions and take care of our curls the rest of time :) Good luck with your challenge, you'll end up liking your hair more!
i just bought that aussie hairspray today because there was a buy one get one 1/2 price in superdrug, and i wante dto know how u use it?
