So I got a message on my YouTube today from someone who was kind of enough to warn me of a rumour going round.
The rumour is that MAC have rescinded their policy of giving away MAC Pro cards at IMAT events and the fingers are pointing at the video that I made back in January. Apparently a few disgruntled people saw that video – complained to MAC – and so the policy has now changed.
This is really upsetting and I have been worrying about it. I never intended or could have foreseen that anyone would complain. I especially felt this way as I wasn’t revealing any “secrets”.
The only reason I knew at all about the Pro card situation was because at IMATS LA 2008 they were giving them away. As a result there were countless videos and blogs from people – with pictures of eager makeup lovers patiently queuing up to get their hands on the card – and that is how I and other people who attended the London event found out about it in the first place.
I wasn’t the first one to discuss it – the reality is that I was just one person in a long chain of people.
I am really sorry to anyone who was pinning their hopes on getting a MAC pro card that way. I just want you to know that I never ever intended this kind of outcome.

I heard this too! I was hoping it was a rumour :( I really need one! But have no intentions of becoming a MUA/Hairdresser/Beauty therpist etc! Oh well!
It's not your fault though, you didn't reveal anything you wasn't supposed to. If it was such a big secret they would have told people to keep their mouth shut haha! They're just silly!

It was common knowledge so I wouldn't worry about it at all. No one on here would be angry with you about something like that.
If anyone's to blame it's the people who complained to MAC. Someone always has to ruin it for other people! It's not your fault, and like you said, there were posts/videos going around from those who got one in LA. Don't worry about it!
It was bound to happen at some point. IMATs MAC Pro cards were a loophole waiting to be closed and all you were doing was trying to spread the love so others might take advantage. The Pro card system is exactly that: for Pros and if you weren't and got it anyway, then hey it's a bonus. But it doesn't mean that people are ENTITLED to them and somehow you've taken that right away.
Don't waste another second worrying about it.
This is absolutely not your fault Laura! You didn't do anything wrong...in fact, you were being very kind and generous because you wanted all of your subscribers to have a chance to get one. It's definitely not your fault. Heaps of people were discussing it on the net way before IMATS even came to the UK. I agree that if it's anyone's fault it's whoever made the complaints. MAC weren't exactly keeping the pro cards a secret, so if they didn't have a problem with people knowing noone else should have either.

Boy....I'm just glad I got mine at the UK IMATS this year!! It was never gonna last forever and I for one solely went along to get the card and anything else was a bonus.
If they're gonna revoke the free for all sign up, they should just make people turn up with their quals and they can get their cards on the spot instead of waiting x amount of weeks for it to be processed.
If this is true, then I feel for the girls planning on going to the UK IMATS next year as the Pro card aside, I thought it totally crap and a huge disappointment anyway in comparison to the ones held stateside.
Like someone previously mentoned, it was bound to happen!
I think they should reconsider how easy it is to apply at the IMATS for one, instead of getting rid altogether!
laura honestly i wouldn't even apologize, it's definitely not your fault at all - it was bound to happen eventually! it's unfair for anyone to pin it on you just because you are a popular guru! i mean other people made videos & you were just trying to help people out! When things go wrong people generally always like to find someone to place blame on, so don't be upset!!
We forgive you hunni. Actually it's quite pretentious of MAC to stop giving them out at IMATS. It's like we have to be special to get one. Oh well.

This is completely not your fault, like others have said, TONS of people have made it a point, ad it would have spread either way, even through word of mouth. And this is utterly stupid of MAC in my opinion. I mean, now that more people know about it, more people who care about purchasing MAC would want to go to IMATS to get it. It would help both IMATS and MAC, because even with the discount I'm sure they are profiting anyways. Besides, these cards help build customer loyalty which is what every brand wants.

It isn't your fault at all. I am annoyed by lelugaga's rescent comments but has convieniently deleted a lot of older comments on that video. Some MUA's ure real snobs about this kind of thing.

I wouldn't worry Laura. There are a ton of videos on that subject, it's not like you came out and spilled a secret that noone knew about.
By the way, I find it super fishy that this "lelugaga" person created an account yesterday and went on your IMATS video, leaving all those comments. Don't know, something doesn't add up here if you ask me.
I am sure if you "Googled" how to get a MAC Pro Card many other sites, videos etc would pop up - its so silly to just blame you. x
It's not your fault, alot of people made videos about getting a card and they were giving them out in the states.
That person who commented on your video said that people who obtained a pro card at imats without credentials wont be able to use the card now? is that true? could you please let us know when you next go to mac laura? thanks
Unfortunalty I think this is true, someone on Speckta rang and they confirmed that from now on you will need to provide documentation at IMATS to get a pro card. But please don't worry I highly doubt it was just because of your video, that is just silly!

awww, that sucks. I don't know why MAC have to go ahead and change the policy. I mean, if you go to IMATS, chances are (for the non-pro), you love makeup! So what's so wrong with giving people MAC pro card at IMATS? That's just silly. I wouldn't stress about it, no worries! :-)

Selfish and petty! What difference does it make to them (the "Authentic professionals") who gets to enjoy a discount with their Pro card?
The people who complained are just mad that they no longer get to feel special.

What I don't get is who could have complained...bet they have a PRO card though...sounds a bit hypocritical...I don't imagine a professional caring that much if some MAC fans get a discount...they're already selling out every collection (at least here in Greece they do) so it doesn't seem that they are doing that bad....

It's a total non issue - nobody could peg this down to you - a rumor is just that - totally unfounded. With all the other YT'ers out there talking about it how could anyone say it was your fault. Just keep doing your thing. That is what we love you for!
Hope you feel better since none of us care or even thought for a moment it was really your fault. I would have grabed one too! We all would have! MAC is to blame for giving them away and then acting like it wasn't their fault and that someone abused the system. Iresponsible of them and the complainer.
You really shouldn't worry Laura. It's not as if you were the only one to know about the Pro Card handouts. It's pathetic for people to complain when it wasn't just you talking about it. You were just spreading the love and being considerate into letting your viewers know about the Pro Card.

I agree with everyone else that has commented. It's not your fault and I think it's terrible that people would complain? How does it affect a pro makeup artist if I get a discount on Mac or not? If anyone truly did complain, they are lame.

This makes me really not want to shop at MAC as much anymore! I think I will start focusing on some other brands. Anyway, I hope we've all convinced you not to worry about this at all. You did nothing wrong :)

i have the contact details for becca, the head of mac pro cards for the uk i think ill email her to see whats going on with them especially as people are saying your not allowed to use them anymore :(
mac should realise that the pro cards are not a bad thing as people buy alot more than they normally would without the discount.

That is so stupid that someone would blame you for MAC deciding to stop sign ups for pro cards at IMATS events.
And also, I would like to point out that you paid for entry to IMATS, plus extra on top of that to get your pro card. Not exactly cheap either...
And I read a comment on the IMATS video from 'lelugaga' that you would now not be able to use your pro card without showing MUA credentials instore.
Well, if that's true then MAC should refund you the money you paid for the card as it would now be worthless!

It's not your fault Laura...when I saw that video I thought it was so cool (and even dreamed about going to IMATS and get one when I'm a little older), however, it also came to me that it was not fair for those who worked so hard to get their own pro card. I mean, let's face it, I don't think if any of us got our pro cards the hard way we would just want people to get it that easily-- even when they are not pros. It's being a PRO's privilege. It's like this: if you got it because you're a pro it's because you're entitled to it, if you're not a pro but you have it, then count yourself very lucky. If the pro card was meant for you, then you'll get it someday, somehow. Don't be one-sided about this issue people, really look at the different POVs. And as for MAC, they should've thought about the outcome and came out with a better back-up plan.

if you're an industry professional and have a MAC PRO card, why should you care/complain/get annoyed if they're being given out to those who are not in the industry?
how to they "work so hard" to get one? they simply submit an application and two documents showing their profession.
honestly. who actually sits home and gets pissed because someone who ISN'T a model/makeup artist/stylist, etc. has one?

The only person to blame here is the person/persons who complained to MAC and ruined it for everyone else. Just because they're bitter that they didn't get one....urgh. I hate party poopers. :-P
