YouTubing

I came across a video today which advertised a course. This course was all about telling you how to become a successful makeup guru on YouTube.

Now I am sure that it tells you a lot of other things too but I would tentatively suggest that you do not need to shell out cash on an e-book to get subscribers.

Here are some suggestions that I would make to anyone who wants a helping hand into the world of YouTube. There are plenty of viewers to go around so I think everyone reading this blog should get involved :)

1) I think the golden rule of YouTube is to make the kind of videos that you yourself would watch.

Go with your instinct because if you feel that way - chances are thousands of others do too.

For example, I love haul and review videos above any other kind of contribution. Tutorials are okay every once in a while but what I am after is insight into that person's life and an opinion that I can take into consideration.

As a result, I upload alot of haul and review videos - as I said, these are the kind of videos that I, myself would watch.

2) Getting exposure - now that the ground rules are set start thinking about how you are going to get noticed. A lot of people include tags of the big gurus in their video descriptions. That's one way of getting clicks but if your video doesn't actually refer to the guru, the viewers might not stay and as a result, you won't get subscribers.

A better idea would be to create a video in response to a popular tag that is going around - one that you feel you can add your opinion to.

I know that one of the best videos to start with is "Whats in my bag/purse". This is part of a huge collaborative tag and is the type of video that a lot of people like to watch, provides viewers with excellent insight into who you are as a person and you can attach it as a response to countless other videos.

3) Contest time - I like contests. I think they are a great way of giving back to subscribers. After all, if nobody watched my videos, I wouldn't bother as I would just be talking to myself - and I can do that without having to edit and endure a tedious upload process to YouTube.

Contests will also see your subscriber numbers increase. That goes without saying. If subscription is an entry requirement then you can expect a flurry of people taking part.

Of course this is all focussing on subscriber numbers and that's rather cynical. More is not always better but it's basic arithmetic: more subscribers = more viewers = a greater presence on YouTube and if that is what you are after then this is one way of doing it.

4) Be responsive - being responsive to comments and messages on YouTube is akin to being that friendly and helpful person in the office/school - it gets you a good reputation. Conversely, not answering any will make you seem selfish and aloof.

I personally think answering comments is hugely important - someone took the time to watch your umpteen minute video, type in a comment and click on the button to post. It's only right that you say a thank you.

I also think this works both ways. Write comments on your favourite YouTubers videos - even if it is saying "thank you" or "good job" it spreads that little bit of positivity - and if you were thinking like a hard nosed YouTube strategist, gets your username out there.

A final caveat

Now these are just some thoughts I have and here they are for free - a bargain price of $0.00 :)

I would say though that YouTube is not all about numbers.

It's not a business - it's a hobby.

The best thing about this community is the people that you will meet along the way - people that share your interest and people that become your friends.

If you get subscribers then great but don't forget - makeup is fun and the YouTube experience should be too.

Laura you are so brilliant! I don't even have a youtube account and I don't plan to but I read all of this anyways just to read what you had to say. I love your humor and style :).

Very well said! I don't make videos but I just started a blog! Baby steps. :) I've recorded some videos on my phone, but I don't think the quality is good enough to put on youtube. Someday I'll get a camera! These are some great tips, thank you!

I don't do YT videos but think this is really nice and your advice is so helpful. Wish other YT's would take your advice on leaving comments, the amount of rude gurus who leave cheeky comments for their followers is ridiculous! xx

Great advice! Every point is very useful. I only blog at the moment but if I decide to start making videos I'll bear in mind these tips :)

@ellamarie84 - semi good quality videos is important too but personality outweighs that i think :) maybe in a few months time you will be YouTubing :)

Very well said. I used to make videos but I was pretty hopeless. lol I much prefer watching other people's. lol I'm slowly getting the hang of blogging which I love. I think I prefer the blogging community to the Youtube one. Everyone is so helpful and kind. :) xxx

Thank you! Ive been toying with the idea of making videos on youtube but im not sure if I dare, you were one of the first gurus I found on youtube and you opened my eyes to so many things. I love the community surrounding the make up side of youtube & I've learnt so much!
I think, based on this post, I might actually give it a go:)

Seeing you in Company magazine got me into the whole make up community and I have to say I have never looked back :) I only blog at the moment and I am really trying to get into that (check it out if you like www.wallowpea.blogspot) and I totally agree that being personable and replying to your viewers is very important - its nice to know that the person who your watching cares what you think :) and in turn i think it is nice to thank the guru for making the video.

Unbelieveable that someone would try and sell what is basically common sense.

Thanks Laura - i think you great :)

Laura your 'Whats in my purse' video is the most viewed on youtube!
Just discovered that today x

sabrina said...

thanks for the tips, but with the tag tip, i feel that if i tag a big guru they will just ignore it and not do the tag. would you actually do it?

Emma - [Magpie Sparkles] said...

I absolutely agree on making videos that you yourself would want to watch - It's my personal philosophy when it comes to videos.

lollipop26 said...

@wallowpea - that's great! good luck and let us all know when you do!! :)

lollipop26 said...

@sabrina - i meant that you do a response to their video - ie, luckyprettyeyes started the "what's in my purse" video concept and I did a response video to that. :)

Very well said as always. I hate the way people are starting to look at it as a business and becoming so cynical. I completely agree that it should be a fun hobby :). Thank you xxx

This is great advice. I feel YT should be fun and if you get a great bunch of subscibers then its a bonus knowing people enjoy watching you and want to hear what you have to say. As for haul videos, they are the best, I could watch them all day :)

Shortiee31 said...

Brilliant tips! & I totally agree with your last line.. ''If you get subscribers then great but don't forget - makeup is fun and the YouTube experience should be too'' - I have a blog, YT channel with near 700 subs, but with every follower/sub I get I always get that little bit more :D that there is people out there who like watching what I do! Makeup/beauty is defo. a hobby and I am glad there's a whole load of us that we can share it with :) x

miss_emmajane said...

I am MarilynMiao on YT and it was you who inspired me to starting doing videos! I really enjoy it now - mainly hauls and little rambles but its fun! You are good inspiration!

miss_emmajane said...

I would also add - it is about the fun you have and not the subscribers (they are just a lovely bonus!) I only have three subscribers but I have so much fun doing the videos :)

Cat said...

I sometimes consider making videos for youtube, but I'm happy enough blogging right now. Maybe sometime over summer when I have no more uni exams :-)

Love your channel though, you were the first guru I subscribed to and I take heed in your advice. I can imagine you are responsible for a lot of sales at beauty counters across the UK! You ought to get commission!

xx

@Cat - haha that would be nice :)

Laura,
This was brilliant, so well put! I think YT is more for fun than anything, I think it's great that people want to watch me, but my favorite part is the community aspect and all the other great gurus I've met & talked to who share the same interests as me! I don't think people should have to pay for that info because it's not a numbers game it's for fun :)

Catanya said...

Thanks a lot! As a newly arrived blogger, I feel also attracted by numbers of followers, but you are right and the best thing is to enjoy this world.

Tillyness86 said...

That's really well put. I've wanted to make videos for a while now but have been scared of the bad comments I might get, so I blog instead. I remember your article in company and it was amazing to discover that this community existed both on yt and in the blogs. If only it had been around when I was 12 and wearing my mum’s lipstick! You've given me the push to make a video tomorrow, like you said make the videos you like to watch! Thanks Laura x x

Oh, this post is just one of the many reasons why I love you and your videos, you seem like such a genuine and nice person.

I agree with you that haul/review videos are the most entertaining ones, because at some point you get tired of the tutorials.

I also agree that the youtubers should try to respond back. Certain youtubers dont respond back at all.

I must say that one of the reasons I like you so much is that you usually respond back, even if I just say that it was a helpful review, or that you look amazing(which you always do, he-he :) ) youtubers like beckaofsweden, julieg713 and EGHeartsSSC also are very good at responding back, it is higly appreciated by me and other viewers.

Thanks, i will def continue watching your videos, and keep telling my friends about your channel :)

Jenny9119999 said...

Thanks for the free advice:-) I have a YT channel and although I only have 55 subscribers I enjoy making the videos so much. I'm always planning my next ones. I have a blog too and I'm loving that every bit as much as YT. I started them both at the same time. I love your blog and YT. Can't get enough lol!!

And this is one of the many reasons why I love you. Really, you're just fabulous Laura.

I think a big one is 'be yourself'. People will watch your videos because they like who you are, nobody wants to watch a fake. They want to see someone who they can relate to.

I think I'll surreptitously cut and paste this post and make a mint for myself....! Only joking of course. Though haul videos are such an expensive way of getting good videos to make. hmm but yes takes some guilt out of beauty shopping if you know you're doing it for the kids... Yup, good tips! Thanks!

PS I have a contest going on right now, hope you don't mind if I spread the word here, with your implicit blessing xx

Thanks Laura. This couldn't have come at a better time for me. I just revamped my blog to make it beauty focused and registered for a YT account. I'm not sure if I will make videos or just use it to subscribe and keep track of the videos I love. Either way, your info was great and I can use it to hunt down more guru's to love.

Sarah Bella said...

I agree with you 100%. I don't want to say to much and put my foot in my mouth but charging people for common sence things is a little unfair. Everything you said was all you really need to know. Make good videos, be kind, have fun, make friends, don't worry about the numbers and have fun with the love of make up. Those things will take you far...just look at YOU!:)

Very well said Laura. I see tons of girls who make such entertaining videos, but they just don't have the same following as others. I hope some of these girls take heed to your advice.

Yeah, I thought that whole thing was kind of a scam too! :P

I started with a blog that only a handful of people read... lol I like to do it anyway, even if I am usually just talking to myself.

:D

Great post!

What do you suggest for blogger responses. I want to write back & comment. I go back to pages I've commented on , but I don't think others do.

I really enjoy reading your blog and watching your YouTube videos. I started a beauty blog a few days ago and I have a couple of reviews up. I would love it if you would visit and maybe give me a few pointers on things I could change to make it better. Your opinion would really mean a lot to me. Thanks so much! http://spotlightonbeauty.blogspot.com/

very well said. I think every guru should take your advice on learning how to say thank you or just learn to make a simple response. Gurus should appreciate every viewers who gave a little of their time to watch and leave comments.
And you are right. Youtubing is not a business..it's a hobby.

So... I'm totally jumping on the bandwagon. I really do love your blog and I follow you on youtube as well. I started my own blog yesterday and was fishing around for ideas on how to start... Coincidence that I stumbled across your 'youtubing' advice?! I think not! Eventhough I don't make videos, I think your wisdom works for blogging as well. I just needed a reminder to be myself. I appreciate your willingness to take time to educate others. It's very refreshing. Check out my blog sometime... I would love to know what you think! frugalfabulosity.blogspot.com

Another great post Laura! It actually encouraged me to leave a comment here for the first time!

I am from Yokohama, a city next to Tokyo; therefore very much enjoyed watching your video posts about shopping in Tokyo.. Being able to know EXACTLY where you were talking about etc.. haha.. I'm glad you discovered some interesting stuff while you were there;)

Great blog post, Laura :). Thanks for the tips. I've been making videos for a few months and have a small group of subscribers, but the main reason I make them is because I enjoy doing it :). I don't think an ebook can tell you how to have a good personality :P. I appreciate your $0.00 advice :).

Hey, I came across your account on YOUTUBE and find your videos extremely interesting and informative. Your voice is also entirely captivating! (:

I never heard word from you on youtube so I thought I might stop by here first before I ask someone else but I am from Nova Scotia and am going to London, England in about a weeks time and I was wondering of some places I should stop by for shopping/eating/etc!

If you have any top 10 suggestions/must sees/must dos/must eat at/shop at that would be fantastic! Thank you for your time! (:

I've also seen that one girl trying to sell a DVD or whatever it is to learning how to make a successful makeup channel. When I first heard about that I thought it was a joke! This info is readily available for free on YT, by other video makers as well not involved in the beauty community. People will do anything to make a buck I guess.
